Life-long Democrat Norman E. Osborne has announced his candidacy for Doña Ana County Magistrate Judge, Division IV.
Mr. Osborne is currently the Court Executive Officer of the Third Judicial District Court in Las Cruces. He has served that Court since 2003 as a law clerk, staff attorney, and supervising attorney before accepting his current responsibilities as Clerk of the Court and Court Administrator.
Mr. Osborne came to New Mexico in 1981 following service in the U.S. Navy. He is a 1986 graduate of the University of New Mexico School of law and has served in various public State and local government law positions since that time including District Public Defender in Otero County, Assistant District Attorney in Curry, Roosevelt, and Otero Counties, and Assistant Attorney General in Santa Fe.
As an attorney for the District Court, Mr. Osborne assisted the District Judges in deciding all types of cases from complex civil claims through serious felony charges.
“Our Magistrate Court hears a wide variety of civil and criminal matters, from traffic tickets to landlord-tenant disputes,” he said. “People who come before a Magistrate Judge have a right to expect a Judge with broad legal experience and the ability to treat them with courtesy and respect regardless of the outcome of their hearings.”
Mr. Osborne also said that, in addition to legal knowledge and life experience, “A good Judge must care about people and be willing to listen to their concerns. Finally, a good Judge must be able to explain the reasons for a decison in a way that anyone can understand. I do that well.”
